Belize going green, phasing out plastic bags and foam plates

On March 20, 2018, the Cabinet of Belize approved a proposal that will completely phase out the sale and use of single-use plastic shopping bags as well as Styrofoam and plastic silverware, plates, bowls, and cups.

Vendors in Belize will have until April 22, 2019, to stop selling single-use shopping bags, items made from Styrofoam, and plastic food utensils such as clamshells, flat plates, and cups. This new initiative is an effort to reduce the amount of pollution that these items can cause, which both blight the landscape as well as pose a hazard to wildlife.

Currently, some vendors in Belize are selling plant-based alternatives which are designed to naturally biodegrade. Annually, the government of Belize, in conjunction with volunteer efforts led by local NGOs, has to organize regular clean-ups of the offshore waters and coastal areas in order to remove plastic litter. Animals and birds often mistake plastic for food and can choke on these items, potentially causing serious injury or even death. It is estimated that plastic waste constitutes approximately 19% of all of the solid waste generated in Belize.

As a “green” community built entirely on the concept of self-sustainability and harmonious integration with nature, Cerros Sands enthusiastically applauds the Belizean government’s new initiative that will completely phase out single-use plastic bags and plastic food utensils by 2019.
