According to the Belize Travel Board (BTB), the country is continuing to enjoy record-breaking increases in the number of overnight visitors. According to the BTB, visitor numbers increased by an astonishing 10.8% over the year prior, including a 3.7% boom in the number of cruise ship arrivals. The country’s only international airport, the Philip Goldson Airport outside of Belize City, also reported an 8.1% increase in 2017 over 2016.
Additional factors leading to the rise in tourism numbers in Belize include major travel publications highlighting Belize as a recommended destination. In the past six months, travel publishers such as Fodor’s, Fromm’s, Lonely Planet, the CBC, the New York Times, and National Geographic have all published featured articles on Belize.
The continued rise in tourism numbers bodes well for the real estate market in Belize. Savvy investors have taken advantage of Belize’s permissive property laws to cash in on this tourism boom, many choosing to rent or sell their homes in Belize to visitors for a tidy profit.
Property owners also welcomed the news in January 2018 that the government has enacted a permanent ban on oil drilling in its offshore waters, an important step towards preserving the reef for generations to come.
Other factors contributing to the property boom in Belize include the entrance of Air Canada, the world’s eighth-largest airline, into the red-hot Belize travel market. This comes on the heels of Southwest Airlines adding a third Belize route from its hub in Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, giving North American travelers even more options for finding affordable airfare to Belize.
