TripAdvisor, the world’s biggest travel review site, has recently selected two destinations in Belize as two of the top destinations to visit in Central America in 2017. Based on an aggregate of its users rankings, TripAdvisor selected the island of Ambergris Caye in the northeast and the town of San Ignacio in the west of Belize as must-see destinations for travelers in Central America this year. Ambergris Caye (pronounced “key”) is Belize’s largest island and serves as the gateway to the Belize Barrier Reef, a paradise for snorkeling, sailing, fishing, and scuba diving. San Ignacio is the eco-tourism capital of Belize, the jumping off point to the wild diversity, enormous ancient Maya ruins, and pristine jungles of the western part of the country.
Although it didn’t make TripAdvisor’s list, Belize’s northern Corozal District is rapidly becoming one of the hottest destinations for expats and retirees. Located just across the Chetumal Bay from Ambergris Caye, Corozal District has the ideal combination of infrastructure, natural beauty, adventure opportunities, shopping, and a relaxed lifestyle for individuals looking to invest or retire in Belize.
The rising popularity of Belize as a travel and retirement destination has created hot competition between major airlines to serve this growing market. Airlines such as United, Delta, America, Southwest, and WestJet now offer non-stop service from Belize and major cities across the United States and Canada. With the addition of more non-stop flights from Cancun just across the border from Corozal District in Mexico, it’s now easier and more affordable than ever to visit and live in Belize.
TripAdvisor’s recommendation of Belize as a top vacation destination comes after other major publications such as the New York Times and others also highlighting the wonders of the country. Although Belize is a relatively small country, it has a beautifully diverse and wonderfully natural landscape ranging from verdant, rolling hills in the west to the sun-kissed beaches and tropical offshore islands in the east. Still predominately a rural country, visitors and retirees love the easygoing Caribbean lifestyle, abundance of fresh food, and the delightfully balmy year-round weather. Factor in the Belizean government’s generous residency programs that allow qualifying individuals to live tax free in the country, and it’s easy to see why more and more people are choosing to invest or retire in Belize.
