As regional travel destination heavyweights like Costa Rica and Mexico have been unbearably crowded and overpriced, oft-overlooked Belize is rapidly on its way to becoming one of the world’s most popular destinations.
Just a decade ago, it was impossible to fly directly to Belize from the United States, but now American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, Sun Country Airlines, and United all fly non-stop to Belize from major cities across the country. And for Canadians, WestJet and Air Canada now compete to serve the people of Calgary and Toronto wanting to escape the cold and enjoy a beach vacation in Belize.
Not to be outdone, Aeromexico recently announced that it will begin flying to Belize for the first time ever. Starting on November 17, 2018, Aeromexico will be flying twice a week between Belize and Mexico City. And COPA Airlines, the flag carrier of Panama, has just signed an interline agreement with Belize’s own Tropic Air to make it possible for incoming passengers from Central America to buy just one ticket and not have to re-check their luggage.
Belize has also gotten a huge amount of favorable press recently from the New York Times, Forbes, International Living, Yahoo!, MSN, and National Geographic. Celebrities have been spotted right and left in Belize, including Hollywood heavyweights like Francis Ford Coppola and Leonardo Di Caprio, both of which own or are building resorts in Belize. And Richard Branson, the flamboyant British entrepreneur known for his Virgin companies, will be piloting a submarine to explore Belize’s Great Blue Hole later this year.
All this interest has caused the tourism industry in Belize to grow by leaps and bounds. The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has reported double-digit growth in both the number of cruise ship passengers and overnight visitors coming by air for the past five years in a row. The BTB has a lively presence on social media and received a lot of attention after announcing that it will be organizing the first-ever nationwide hide and seek game this October. Four participants will be selected from thousands of applicants to be the Seekers and enjoy a weeklong all-expenses-paid trip to Belize as they search for the Hider.
