Best Place to Live or Retire
While the island of Ambergris Caye gets the lion’s share of the attention, one of the finest places to live or retire in Belize is the northern Corozal District. Home to picturesque squares, a lovely town library, a handful of churches, and some of the most beautiful wild natural areas in the country, Corozal District in northern Belize is the secret paradise that every expat dreams about.
Corozal District is perfectly situated about halfway between Cancún, Mexico, and Belize City, giving residents expanded options for low-cost flights to the United States and beyond. Much of the interior of Corozal District is dominated by citrus groves and sugar plantations, but the coast includes lovely fishing villages and gorgeous beaches.
Northern Belize is also a birdwatcher’s paradise. Several of the Audobon Society’s Important Birding Areas are located in northern Belize, including the stellar Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary. There are also several wildlife corridors and animal refuges in northern Belize, making the region the perfect place to enjoy activities such as hiking and canoeing.
And some of the most interesting ancient Maya sites are located in northern Belize, including the small but fascinating Maya site of Santa Rita just outside of modern Corozal Town. Other interesting Maya sites in the region include Lamanai, one of the only ancient Maya cities that was still occupied when the Spanish arrived in the New World. Lamanai is home to a strange mixture of ancient Maya temples, the remnants of Spanish churches burned down by Maya rebels, and the remains of British colonial-era sugar mills.
Expats love Corozal District because of its abundance of national parks, gorgeous scenery, and panoramic coastlines, but another prime attraction is its proximity to Mexico. Belize is a laid-back Caribbean paradise, but the lack of industry can make some goods quite expensive. Mexico, on the other hand, is an industrial superpower, and the border town of Chetumal City is home to familiar low-cost retailers like Walmart and Home Depot.
One of the finest places to live or retire in northern Belize is Cerros Sands. A true “community in the country,” Cerros Sands is a gated neighborhood located on the gorgeous Chetumal Bay in Corozal District, situated just nine miles from Mexico. Designed to offer modern conveniences in a beautiful Caribbean setting, Cerros Sands is entirely “off the grid” thanks to sustainable sources of water and energy.
Cerros Sands has homes, condominiums, and land parcels available beginning at just $21,777.00.
