On September 9th, 2019, the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Belize signed the loan agreement between the Export-Import Bank of the Republic of China and the Belize government for $50m USD to upgrade the Corozal-Sarteneja Road. This loan will also cover the construction of the Laguna Seca and Pueblo Nuevo bridges. Standing in to observe the signing was the Ambassador of the Republic of China, Remus Li-Kuo Chen and the Minister of Works of the Government of Belize, Rene Montero.
The Belize government has expressed many thanks and appreciation to the Republic of China for the loan that will facilitate such an important project. The project will vastly improve transportation in northern Belize and help draw both tourists and expats who wish to live and retire in Belize. The loan also positively reaffirms the strong friendship between Belize and Taiwan.
Ground is likely to be broken on the Corozal-Sarteneja Road Project in October of 2019 with the most significant work starting early in 2020.
