As of June 4, 2017, Southwest Airlines has been flying a new non-stop route from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (FLL) to Belize City (BZE). This comes on the heels of Southwest’s first non-stop route to Belize that launched in 2015 connecting Houston’s Hobby Airport (HOU) to Belize City and a second Southwest non-stop route operating from Denver’s International Airport (DIA) to Belize City that began on March 11, 2017.
Fort Lauderdale is a city in Broward County, Florida approximately 30 miles north of Miami, where American Airlines has been offering non-stop flights to Belize City for years. The new Ft. Lauderdale-Belize route from Southwest is expected to dramatically lower air fares, and Southwest’s website has announced fares starting at just $79 a segment.
Southwest’s two new non-stop flights to Belize are clear indications that Belize is rapidly becoming one of the hottest vacation and retirement destinations in the region. United, Delta, and American Airlines already offer non-stop flights to Belize from dozens of cities across the country. Canadians too are now able to enjoy lower cost flights to Belize after Air Canada announced that it will begin operating non-stop flights from Toronto to Belize City, a popular route already served by WestJet.
The increase in travel to Belize is having a knock-on effect on property prices as well. Belize has a generous residency program that allows qualifying individuals age 45 and older and their families to live in Belize tax-free while importing personal items (including vehicles) free of all customs duties. Belize also imposes no capital gains tax and no tax on income generated outside the country, allowing individuals to enjoy their hard-earned wealth. The cost of living is also quite reasonable, one of the many reasons that AARP and other publications have recommended moving to Belize.
Belize is a small Central American country on the Caribbean coast just south of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. With year-round balmy weather, abundant sunshine, and an incredibly eco-diverse landscape, Belize is a popular destination for retirees and expats. The country’s northern Corozal District is especially popular with expats who have a thriving community and easy access to world-class health care and familiar retailers like Walmart and Sam’s Club just across the border in Mexico.
