Retiring in Belize, More Affordable Than Ever

Retirees, vacationers, and expats are rejoicing this month as Southwest, the world’s biggest low-cost carrier, has now added a third non-stop flight from the United States to Belize. The new Southwest route connects Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) in South Florida with a quick 2-hour flight to Belize City (BZE). Southwest also has non-stop flights from Houston (HOU) and Denver (DIA) to Belize.

Southwest joins the growing list of airlines offering attractively priced fares to Belize. United, Delta, and American Airlines also have non-stop flights to Belize from cities across the country, including Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, North Carolina. And Canadians too are enjoying lower ticket prices after Canada Air (the world’s eighth-largest airline) joined WestJet in offering non-stop flights from Toronto (YYZ) to Belize City (BZE).

Belize is rapidly becoming a top destination for retirees and expats thanks to its close proximity to North America, fabulous weather, a low cost of living, and outstandingly beautiful properties. The Belizean government warmly welcomes expats, offering qualifying individuals generous residency programs that only require 30 days in country per year, tax-free importation of personal goods (including vehicles), and no capital gains or income taxes on monies earned outside the country.

Belize is the only country in the region where English is the official language. Beyond making it easy for expats and retirees to talk to locals, one key benefit of doing business in Belize is that all documents, deeds, and contracts are also written in English. And Belize’s judicial system was inherited from the British, making it easy for property owners to enforce their rights.

Another top reason why retirees and expats are increasingly choosing Belize is the range of diverse festivals and holidays that can be enjoyed every month of the year. Add in the fact that Belize has stunningly diverse landscapes, an incredible diversity of plants and animals, and an abundance of fresh, organic food, and it’s easy to see why retirees get a “new lease on life” when they move to Belize.

Another exciting development for expats and retirees is the Belizean government’s announcement that it will be building an international airport on the island of Ambergris Caye. Already the top tourist destination in the country, Ambergris Caye will soon be offering retirees and expats another option for flying to Belize and maintaining personal and business ties in North America.
